How to stop WhatsApp saving photos to your iPhone

WhatsApp can save every photo and video you receive straight into your Photos library, where it syncs to iCloud and turns up in Memories. Turning it off takes a minute.

Turn it off for every chat

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Chats.
  3. Turn off Save to Photos. On older versions it is called Save to Camera Roll.

New photos and videos will stay inside WhatsApp unless you save them yourself.

Turn it off for one chat

If you want to keep saving from most chats but not one:

  1. Open the chat and tap the contact or group name at the top.
  2. Tap Save to Photos.
  3. Choose Never.

Clean up what was already saved

Photos WhatsApp already saved are ordinary photos in your library. Find them in Photos → Albums → WhatsApp, if the album exists, or by date.

Other messaging apps

Telegram, Signal, and others have similar settings, usually under Data and Storage or Chats. Check each app you use: one automatic save setting can undo a lot of careful hiding.

Saving a private photo you received

To keep a photo someone sent you without it touching your library, save it to the Files app from the chat, import it in Vaultage with + → Import files, then delete the copy in Files.
